"I look at Liverpool’s midfield" - Paul Merson on Spurs' new midfielder

Former Arsenal man Paul Merson has implied that Liverpool have missed a trick by not signing midfielder Yves Bissouma.

The Reds were linked with a move for the 25-year-old. However, Bissouma has just joined Tottenham Hotspur from Brighton for a transfer fee of £26.28 million.

Merson believes that the Mali international would have been a good signing for Liverpool.

“This is an unbelievable coup for Spurs as Yves Bissouma could have played for any of the other top-six sides in the Premier League," he told Sports Keeda.

"I look at Liverpool’s midfield and feel he could play for them. £25 million in this day and age – it’s nothing. Spurs have nabbed an absolute bargain.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Bissouma is a talented footballer. The midfielder averaged a WhoScored player rating of 6.93 across the 2021-22 campaign, which backs up the aforementioned argument.

Bissouma is also entering the prime years of his career. Liverpool do possess an ageing midfield. Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are at the backend of their careers (30 years of age).

Therefore, Bissouma would have been a decent addition to Liverpool's midfield. But, it just wasn't meant to be.

In saying that, the Reds possess enough depth in midfield heading into next season (Henderson, Thiago, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones).

So, in the short-term, we are confident Liverpool will be fine in that department.

Going forward, we would love to see the club sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham. The 19-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Anfield, is considered to be one of the finest talents in the game.

Because of Bellingham's age, he could play in Liverpool's midfield for around a decade.
