How many points Liverpool need to win the Premier League title

Winning the Premier League is a gruelling process.

Liverpool have found that out the hard way over the years, with the Reds only boasting one Premier League title despite some memorable seasons towards the upper echelons of the table.

Jurgen Klopp's 2019/20 side managed to end 30 years of hurt for Liverpool supporters and the German coach is looking to finish his Anfield career with a second Premier League title to his name.

However, it will not be straightforward, with Manchester City and Arsenal ready to push the Reds all the way this season.

Here is how many points could win Liverpool the Premier League title.

It's no secret that Man City's dominance under Pep Guardiola has changed standards in the Premier League.

In the 1996/97 season, Manchester United won the league with just 75 points. In comparison, Liverpool earned 22 points more than that during the 2018/19 campaign and still finished runners-up to the Sky Blues.

Therefore, it's probably only worth analysing how many points you need to win the title since Guardiola took over at the Etihad.

In the seven seasons since the Spaniard's arrival, the minimum points total for winning the league was 86 during the 2020/21 season, with the most being 100 points - the Premier League record - in 2017/18.

Liverpool themselves achieved a staggering 99 points in the 2019/20 campaign, but the average over the past seven seasons is 94 points.

In the Premier League era, the Reds have only achieved that points total or higher on two occasions, highlighting just how difficult it will be for Klopp to win the title again this season.

Liverpool currently find themselves on 54 points after 24 league matches and sit top of the table, although Man City will leapfrog them should they win their game in hand.

That means, to reach 94 points, the Reds need another 40 points - 13 victories and a draw from their remaining 14 matches.

Such a tally would be remarkable but appears incredibly unlikely, thus suggesting that the points total needed to win the Premier League this season will be lower than the recent average.

Liverpool still play Man City at Anfield in March, a game that will be absolutely crucial to the Premier League title race, while Arsenal also have to face the reigning champions.

Admittedly, it's impossible to predict exactly how many points Liverpool will need to win the title, but the Reds need at least another 32 (eight victories) to match the lowest title-winning total since Guardiola's arrival.

While all ifs and buts at present, Liverpool know they can't afford any more slip-ups as they chase a dream send-off for Klopp this season.
