"He will be the one" - Martin Skrtel on who will become Liverpool's next manager

Martin Skrtel thinks that his former Liverpool teammate and current Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Speaking to The Times, as quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the ex-Reds centre-back tipped the Scouser to replace the German at Liverpool in the future.

"One day, when Jurgen Klopp or Liverpool decide to go a different way and they bring new people in, he will be the one (to become manager). That would be the perfect way and a perfect step for the club and also for Stevie.

“At the moment we have Jurgen and he is the best man for the job. I see Stevie as the manager after because he’s getting the experience now. He was in Glasgow (at Rangers) and now he’s in Aston Villa. I hope he can do a good job there.

“Stevie obviously has the personality and also his quality on the pitch. The guy loves football and he understands football.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

In late April last season, Klopp extended his contract with Liverpool which will see him stay at the club until 2026.

Gerrard is great and all, but he would be the first to say that you can't compare him to one of the best managers in the game.

One day Gerrard could manage Liverpool, however, I don't think it'll be in 2026. Who knows, Klopp could even extend his stay beyond 2026.

He and his family love Liverpool and he's admitted that this is now his second home, so what would be the point in leaving.

The German is still hungry for success and whilst Fenway Sports Group are backing him, he has no reason to leave Anfield.

In saying that, I still believe once Klopp does leave, hopefully not for many many years, Pep Lijnders (assistant Liverpool manager) will probably be his successor.

However, Gerrard could become Liverpool's boss one day. He's still a young manager and he has many years ahead of him.
