'He has taken the responsibility' - Harvey Elliott praises Darwin Nunez for improved English skills

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been taking English classes to help improve his communication with teammates and the hard work is paying off according to youngster Harvey Elliott.

The Uruguayan took some time to settle on Merseyside after arriving from Benfica in the summer of 2022, with the 24-year-old knowing little English when he first rocked up at Anfield.

His inability to communicate with teammates and, most importantly, Jurgen Klopp made his transition more problematic, with the Spanish-speaking players in the squad, such as Thiago Alcantara, having to help translate for the attacker.

Despite his struggles, Darwin Nunez still posted some good numbers during his debut campaign, but the forward has taken his output to a new level this season with some impressive displays.

Nunez's improved form may be due to his better grasp of English, with Harvey Elliott crediting the former Almeria striker for his commitment to learning a new language.

Speaking to Liverpool's official website, Elliott stated: "I think the whole world can see now. It’s hard for him to come from a different country first and foremost, but to a country where he doesn’t know the language, he couldn’t speak it.

"Now he has taken the responsibility of learning English and you can have a conversation with him now, which is nice.

"It’s just all credit to him. He’s going to kick on now and he’s going to show the world, that’s for sure."

Nunez has provided 12 goals and 11 assists in 36 Liverpool appearances this season - a better tally than in the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign.

15 of those goal contributions have come in the Premier League as the Uruguay international helps Liverpool push for the title, while he has also played a big part in the Europa League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup this season.
