Barcelona’s director Mateu Alemany has made it clear that midfielder Gavi is on the verge of agreeing new terms with the La Liga club.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the 17-year-old in recent times. However, Alemany has implied that Gavi is close to signing a new deal with Barcelona.

The Spain international's current contract expires next summer.

As quoted by Barcelona's official website, Alemany said the following: “There is a framework agreement for the renewal of Gavi, with the player and with his agent.

“The club, the player and the agent are committed to making this happen.

“We will wait until the player is 18 years old to be able to sign a contract of more than three years.

“Gavi is going to continue at Barca, 100 percent.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Gavi is a promising young talent. The midfielder has scored two goals and registered six assists in 46 appearances for Barcelona.

Gavi also averaged a WhoScored player rating of 6.77 across the 2021-22 campaign.

Because of the Spain international's age, it would be fair to assume that he still has plenty of room left for improvement. Gavi is far from the finished article.

Liverpool do possess an ageing midfield. Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are both in their 30s. So, the aforementioned names are definitely at the backend of their careers.

Signing a player like Gavi would make sense for the long-term.

But, it sounds like the youngster will be signing a new deal with Barcelona. Therefore, the Reds will have to look elsewhere.

Then again, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp knows how to find a good player. His record in the transfer market is superb.
