Fabrizio Romano provides update on Liverpool's 'main candidate' Xabi Alonso
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool "know everything" about Xabi Alonso's contract situation at Bayer Leverkusen and the Spaniard is the "main candidate" to replace Jurgen Klopp.
Since Klopp announced his decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season, there has been plenty of speculation regarding who could succeed him in the dugout.
However, Liverpool supporters are currently unanimous in their appreciation for one potential replacement, that being former Red Xabi Alonso.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder has been doing a sensational job at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, with his side currently unbeaten in all competitions and having just gone five points clear at the top of the table after easing past title rivals Bayern Munich 3-0 last weekend.
With Liverpool fans pretty much set on Alonso taking over from Klopp, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the club are "well-informed" on his situation at the BayArena.
"Liverpool are well-informed on the situation of Xabi Alonso," said Romano on his YouTube channel. "Liverpool know everything about his contract situation at Bayer Leverkusen, how to find a way to appoint Xabi Alonso potentially in the summer.
"So, Liverpool are really well-informed on the situation of Xabi Alonso.
“Then we have to wait for the new Liverpool [sporting] director to decide altogether how, when, and in which way to attack the situation for Xabi Alonso as the manager.
"We have to see if they will decide to go for another one because there is a shortlist. It is not only Xabi Alonso, but for sure he is the main candidate for Liverpool."
Romano's update will be met with positivity by the club's supporters, the majority of whom are desperate to see Alonso find his way back to Merseyside.
However, rather understandably, it seems that Liverpool are eager to appoint a sporting director before making a final decision on the new manager.
Jorg Schmadtke, who only joined the Reds last summer, left the club in February after overseeing two transfer windows, with the Reds seeking a replacement for the German.
Liverpool may have to be quick if they wish to appoint Alonso, however, with Romano also stating that he is very much appreciated by one of his other former clubs Bayern.
With Thomas Tuchel's position in Bavaria under threat in the long-term, Alonso could be eyed as the man to lead a new era at the Allianz Arena.
