"Definitely one to keep an eye on" - Journalist on a potential Liverpool departure

Journalist Tom Collomosse has implied that Aston Villa remain interested in Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez.

The Villans were linked with a move for the Englishman during the January transfer window. However, Gomez ended up staying at Anfield.

Despite that being the case, Collomosse has made it clear that Aston Villa are still in the market for a top centre-back and Gomez could still be that player.

As quoted by Anfield Edition's Twitter account, the journalist said the following: "They're [Aston Villa] looking for a top class centre-back and although he's still improving in some ways, Joe Gomez is an England international, Premier League champion and played in the best competitions.

"I think that's definitely one to keep an eye on."

Gomez is out of contract come the summer of 2024.

Anfield Watch Verdict

There is no denying that Gomez is talented footballer. The centre-back averaged a WhoScored player rating of 6.78 during the 2019-20 campaign.

However, Gomez has since struggled to stay fit. Despite that being the case, the Englishman is still only 24 years of age.

Therefore, we don't want to see Gomez and Liverpool part ways. We are confident that if the defender can get his body right, he could lead Liverpool's defence in the years to come.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of Gomez.

"He is a sensational footballer, which is good," the German told the club's official website back in January 2020.

“He has outstanding speed, which helps us a lot to keep our last line high; he is a really good challenger; good in one-on-one situations; football-wise, I said already, good.

“The package is really nice. It was always clear in the moment he starts playing and can get rhythm again, everything will be fine – and that’s how it is.”

Despite being fit for the entire 2021-22 campaign, Gomez has only made 12 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

Hopefully Gomez can find his feet again.
