Bayern Munich chief addresses Xabi Alonso rumours amid Liverpool interest

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl says that the German champions haven't contacted Liverpool managerial target Xabi Alonso about succeeding Thomas Tuchel. 

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is still Liverpool's number one candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the current campaign, with the former Reds midfielder greatly appreciated by the cub's hierarchy.

Even with the imminent return of Michael Edwards in the boardroom, the Spanish coach is still Liverpool's first-choice successor to Klopp this summer.

However, Liverpool know that they will have to fend off interest from one of Alonso's other former employers Bayern, who have marked the 42-year-old as the perfect replacement for the departing Tuchel.

Alonso's Leverkusen are ten points clear of Bayern in the Bundesliga at present and still remain unbeaten in all competitions this campaign, hence why he is so highly sought after by Europe's elite.

But according to recently appointed Bayern sporting director Eberl, Die Roten are yet to contact Alonso or any other coach over a potential move this summer.

Speaking to Sky Germany, Eberl stated: "Of course we want the new coach to be chosen as quickly as possible, but it has to be right, there won't be a quick fix.

"We have a list of priorities that we want to work through. But we still have one more season with Thomas Tuchel. We want to finish in the best possible way. That's why I've often spoken about the balancing act and that's what we have to do.

"It's not my place to talk about other coaches. We have to keep our jobs and find out who is the right one.

"Then we have to see what it can cost and whether we can afford it. There are many facets that play a role when looking for a coach.

"We haven't spoken to anyone yet. It will always be respectful because one or two candidates have another club, so it's not that easy."

Eberl is understandably keeping his cards close to his chest regarding Bayern's next appointment, with the German side also said to appreciate Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.

If Alonso were to choose Bayern over Liverpool, the Reds would likely turn their attention to Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim.
