Liverpool manager Slot BLASTS Konaté defending error that gave Wolves goal

Goals, as the old adage goes, are like buses. You wait years for one and then two come at the same time.

Or at least this is the case for Ibrahima Konaté, who now has two goals in his last three appearances in a Liverpool shirt. He last hit the back of the net in an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City in April 2022, before netting the equaliser at the San Siro in Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Milan and then the opener at Molineux yesterday.

He also, frustratingly, critically miscommunicated with goalkeeper Alisson, with neither man coming for a stray ball and allowing Wolves to pounce for an equaliser. This was clearly like water off a duck’s back to the Frenchman, however, and he made clear in the Sky Sports interview after the game that he thought his performance was Man of the Match-worthy.

Man of the Match

Asked to give the trophy to teammate Ryan Gravenberch, whose performances under new manager Arne Slot continue to grow, Konaté cut a comical figure.

“Sky Sports - who decides who is the Man of the Match?” Ibou half-joked, “How is this possible? It’s my brother, I have to give [the trophy] to him. Milan I score, today I score, I saved one or two balls and I didn’t deserve it?! No, no, no, what happened? You know! You have to talk with them, I don’t know who decided it.”

When informed that it was former Manchester United player turned super-pundit Gary Neville, Konaté simply shook his head. Gravenberch didn’t mind however, making sure to thank Neville for his wise choice.

Later, manager Arne Slot gave his verdict on Konaté’s opinions in his own interview on Sky Sports. When informed that the defender thought he deserved the Man of the Match accolade, Slot said:

“Maybe he forgot the moment that we conceded a goal - it looked like as if he was not there!... To say the least, it was avoidable.”

The manager was jovial but it would be fair to admit he didn’t seem best pleased with Konaté’s mistake. Shielding the ball will probably be a sticking point in training this week.
