Journalist says Gordon to Liverpool transfer is unlikely before deadline

Liverpool are unlikely to complete the signing of Anthony Gordon today, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

With Newcastle United required to make a couple of big sales this summer in order to stay compliant with profit and sustainability rules (PSR), the 30 June accounting deadline has set up the possibility for a deal to be done.

In fact, the Daily Mail reported that Liverpool were in talks with the Magpies this week over a move for the England international, only for a sticking point to emerge surrounding highly-rated central defender Jarell Quansah heading in the opposite direction.

With the Reds unwilling to meet those demands, they backed away from talks without making an offer. Although it was made clear in the aforementioned report that discussions could yet resume over the weekend, potentially resulting in a bid if things went well.

Furthermore, Daily Mail Journalist Lewis Steele added fuel to the fire by stating his belief that Sunday - the final day before clubs must meet the rules - could be a big one for several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool.

"Get the yellow ties out, PSR deadline day is more exciting than the real thing," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Antony Gordon transfer update

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed in his Daily Briefing via GIVEMESPORT that as things stand, Liverpool are not expected to meet Newcastle’s demands to sign Gordon which means a move is unlikely to happen in the next 24 hours ahead of the PSR deadline.

The journalist goes on to explain that the Merseyside giants will need to present a 'crazy' proposal in order to land the England international, as a deal for the forward never reached an advanced stage due to the huge gap in valuations between both clubs.

With that said, Romano does state there is still a chance Liverpool do land Gordon before the summer transfer window closes. But that's on the condition that Newcastle drop their asking price.
