Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in line for SHOCK BAN

Alisson has been a standout player not only for Liverpool since he joined the club but also for his national side, Brazil.

He was rewarded with his fantastic performances for Brazil by being made the then-most expensive goalkeeper of all time back in 2018 and has been a mainstay since.

However, in bizarre new claims made by the Brazilian President, he could be set to lose his place in the starting lineup.

Speaking to O Povo/CBN Radio in Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, more commonly known as just Lula, said that he suggested a domestic league players-only squad in a meeting with Brazilian Football Confederation President, Ednaldo Rodrigues.

"I have been arguing for some time that a Brazilian team should be called up with players who compete in the Brasileirao," Lula explained, "I was with the president of the CBF in Brasília in recent days, [and] I said to him: 'Why don't you call up a team with only players from the Brazilian championship?'”.

"Those who are abroad are no better than those who are here. We don't have a lot of people out there, we don't have a Garrincha, a Romario... you have a lot of young people who, God willing, are successful, but they aren't stars yet.”

Should Alisson miss out?

The comments followed Brazil’s 2-1 defeat of Chile in Santiago on Thursday night. And despite good performances from the European-based Raphinha, Rodrygo and Savinho, both of their goals were scored by Botafogo’s Igor da Cruz and Luiz Henrique.

The coincidental nature of this wasn’t lost on Lula.

"And yesterday was something that God helped me with: the thing I've been talking about happened.” Lula said, “The goals were scored by two players who play in Brazil, for Botafogo, so give the guys a chance here."

Botafogo currently sit top of the

Brasileirao

. Their top scorer this season, Júnior Santos, has never even made an appearance for the national team.

15 of the 23 players in the current

Seleção

ply their trade in Europe. Alisson missed out through the injury sustained in Liverpool’s last match against Crystal Palace.

And whilst an all-domestic squad would be restrictive on the Liverpool star, it would be interesting to see what happened.
