Alan Shearer believes Erling Haaland will be the difference between City and Liverpool

Former Newcastle United forward Alan Shearer has given his verdict on the 2022-23 Premier League title race.

Manchester City have signed goal machine Erling Haaland ahead of the new season. The Norway international scored 86 goals in 89 appearances for Borussia Dortmund's first-team.

With that being the case, Shearer believes that Manchester City will claim the Premier League title this campaign.

“Only one point separated them in the end last time and it is going to be incredibly tight this season too,” the former England international told BBC Sport.

“If I had to choose a winner now, it would be City – just about – because of Erling Haaland.

“They won the title without him last year, and without using a real centre-forward. Now they have got one who could and should score a minimum of 30 goals this season.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We can see where Shearer is coming from. But, Liverpool signed striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica for a transfer fee of £67.50 million earlier this summer.

The Uruguay international is more than capable. Last weekend, Nunez scored against Manchester City in the Community Shield final.

In fact, he had more of an influence on the game than Haaland. Liverpool won the match 3-1.

If Nunez can somewhat match Haaland this season, then who knows, perhaps the Reds could pip Manchester City to the title.

Haaland has arrived in England with the bigger reputation. But, that could work in Nunez's favour. He could fly under the radar this season.

Despite that being the case, Liverpool will have to be at their best to overtake Manchester City this campaign. The Citizens are a very good side, which is why they have won four of the past five titles.
