Over the years, Liverpool have always looked to give young players opportunities to develop in the first team. It's part of what makes the club such an attractive destination.

Under Jurgen Klopp's tenure, we saw the introduction of Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2018 and Curtis Jones in 2019, who were both 18 years old when they made their debuts and just last season, Jarrell Quansah was given his first starts in senior mens football.

In addition, players such as Harvey Elliott (16), Conor Bradley (18) and Caoimhin Kelleher (21) were each given their chance when warranted one upon graduating from the academy.

This philosophy has been carried forth by Arne Slot who has become increasingly fond of James McConnell, who is right on the periphery of joining the senior Liverpool squad full-time as a player willing to play as both a midfielder and a full-back.

On Merseyside, players get their chance and one player who is already knocking on the door at an incredibly young age is hoping to make break into the team sooner rather than later.

Rio Ngumoha - a phenom who knows his value

Despite being only 16 years old, Rio Ngumoha is a young talent who is destined to go to the very top of the game.

He is classified as an U18 in the academy structure, but Liverpool are incredibly excited by the potential he has shown, allowing him to train with the senior squad in pre-season and record minutes in the domestic cups.

Liverpool fought tooth and nail for him to move to Merseyside from Chelsea, in a transfer that was highly contested, leaving the London Blues with egg on their face when the Reds came away victorious.

And for good reason. His dribbling ability on the left-side of the pitch is breathtaking, as he nonchalantly makes his way past defenders before setting up his teammates or going for a solo effort.

Featuring for the England U17s last night, he delivered two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over Northern Ireland, where every ounce of his technicality was on show for all to see.

Of course, it might well be a little premature for Ngumoha to make appearances for the Reds in the Premier League, but we could definitely see him around the squad on a more regular basis.

His talent is undeniable and the composure he has in front of goal is evidence of maturity beyond his years.

Liverpool's forward line is in a bit of a rough patch at the moment, with several players looking likely to leave this season, so once the Premier League title is wrapped up, it might not be unthinkable that Slot could roll the dice on him.
