Liverpool fans wanted the signing of Darwin Nunez to work out so badly.

Since signing for the Reds in 2022, his contribution has unfortunately been minimal, showing glimpses of his talent in certain weeks, but his downfalls and poor performances are what regularly comes to mind.

Now, with Diogo Jota almost back to full fitness and Luis Diaz taking up the number 9 position in certain games, Nunez may see his time in the starting eleven as incredibly limited.

He is not the out-and-out clinical striker the Reds were hoping he would be. He is too erratic in front of goal and doesn’t provide an extensive threat as a lone striker.

The recruitment team therefore may need to look elsewhere and one player who has caught the imagination of all Premier League fans could be a welcome option.

Liam Delap delights Reds

Liam Delap has been an ever present machine for Ipswich Town this season. The Tractor Boys are struggling with life back in the top flight sitting 19th, three points from safety. But Delap looks right at home in the league. The 21-year-old has already scored six goals including a vital winner against Tottenham away from home.

His towering strength and ability to hold up play is remarkable along with his instinctive striker's finishing. He has therefore caught the eye of some big name clubs including Liverpool.

The Mail Online released their club by club guide for the January transfer window and hinted at Delap’s future at Ipswich stating: “The striker is wanted by Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Manchester City with the Premier League champions having a buy-back clause in place. There is also understood to be a release clause for other suitors.”

With Erling Haaland at City, Pep Guardiola may find no need for Delap to return to the club. But for Liverpool, he would be a perfect fit to an ever-transitioning team.

It is sad to find a Nunez replacement as he is a clear fan favourite and puts his absolute all into every minute he is on the pitch.

But he lacks that deadly goal scoring ability and he lets his emotions get the better of him which affects his style of play. Delap is cool headed character who is hungry for goals, a cheap, viable option for Arne Slot.
