Liverpool have been aware all season that they are going to have to do a pretty significant overhaul this summer.

But the main question was who stays and who goes?

Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk were the giant names out of contract, demanding all the attention.

But, as the season started, some other names began to emerge.

Andy Robertson was one of these.

It wasn’t that Robertson was particularly bad at the start of the season, per se, but he clearly wasn’t the dynamic, rugged left-back that made him the icon he is.

Multiple penalties given away, including in a crucial Champions League tie with Real Madrid, and a 17th-minute red card against Fulham were indicative of a man who was still willing to give everything for the club, but the speed of the game seemed to be passing him by.

But since the new year the Scottish captain has seemed to find a vein of form. He’s rediscovered what made him arguably the best left-back in the world once upon a time, minimising mistakes and committing to the physicality needed to bring him back into the game.

And he may be about to be rewarded for it.

Robertson could be on for a new contract

“The search for a young left-back continues as Liverpool look for a long-term successor for Robertson.” reads an article in The Athletic, continuing, “Extending the Scot’s contract is not out of the question, though, as he remains an integral part of the team.”

As exclusively reported by Anfield Watch, Liverpool opened talks with Bournemouth over a deal for left-back Milos Kerkez back in November. Those rumours have only intensified since and it appears likely a deal will be done.

But signing one full-back for the future wouldn’t exactly provide Liverpool the squad depth needed in the long term if Robertson was allowed to leave after his contract expires at the end of next season.

Liverpool don't often make a habit of renewing the contracts of players over 30 (or particularly signing those over 25). It's a pretty good rule to live by, given the fast deterioration that can be seen at the elite level of the sport when those ages come about.

But, as talented as Kerkez is, replacing a 30-year old national team captain who may be about to win his second Premier League title with a 21-year old from Bournemouth may have a detrimental effect in the dressing room and with on-pitch leadership.

Robertson has earnt an extended stay at Anfield. His ability to overcome adversity has again shown the type of player and person he is. At this stage, it seems like a real no-brainer.
